2D & 3D Animations: Expanding the Possibilities for the Video Production

Animation is a century-old art that has been creating wonders in motion pictures. It has expanded the horizons of possibilities about what filmmakers and video production industries can create. Looking at its infinite opportunities, HappyClips has assembled a team of versatile & prolific 2D & 3D animators to make engaging video content for filmmakers, ad agencies, corporates, educational institutions, and so on.

What is 2D animation?

The art of making movements in a two-dimensional space is known as 2D animation. Every aspect of the video, including the characters, objects, and background, is rendered in two-dimensional, flat spaces.

In 2D animation, individual sketches are sequenced together over the course to produce the illusion of movement. Nowadays, 2D animation video production has advanced from hand-drawn to digital tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.

What is 3D animation?

3D animation is the process of bringing characters, cars, props, and other objects to life in TV shows, films, and video games by using motion. Computer 3D animation is the process of making moving images in a three-dimensional digital environment.

Some of the best computer software tools for doing 3D animations are Adobe After Effects, Unity, and Blender.

Storyboarding A rough shot-by-shot representation is made on tools like canva, adobe photoshop, storyboarder, or any other storyboarding tool. Additionally, artists can hand draw them. Mere sketches aren’t enough. A visualization of the flow of the animation is done through 3D character designs, using tools like Maya, 3D Max, etc.
Visual Elements Development / Modelling Here, Characters and other visual elements for the video are created as part of the 2D visual development process. Animators refine storyboards with colors and textures to make all of the features and characters ready for animation. Using 3D modeling, animators generate objects & characters, which are then manipulated in 3D software. These manipulations allow for the export of picture sequences that make it appear as if the movement is taking place in a 3D digital environment.
Texturing Animators add textures to 3D models by superimposing 2D images on them. It creates a sense of realism through the application of colors, textures, and designs. It is known as mapping, and it entails developing objects and character designs.
Rigging Bone structure, depth, and limitations are applied to the characters, allowing them to move in unique ways using 3D rigging.
Animated Video Production The animator draws the characters and the background separately before combining them into a video file. Adobe After Effects and Animate are amazing 2D animation software in the industry. Using the software, the 3D models are now animated to move. Animators can also import animation and motion data to animate their models using the spline method or motion capture.
Computer Graphics Light Effects 3D animation lighting is similar to the lighting in photography or filmmaking. The lighting artist arranges a variety of light sources to draw attention to a specific aspect of the setting, to set the overall mood of the scene, or to represent natural properties of the scene, such as time of day. It adds another layer of believability to the video.
Compositing In 3D compositing, render passes such as the background, shadows, etc., from the production, are combined. Additional images and layers are also added to create a more cohesive composition. The process can be simple or complex depending on the layers and depth required for the video.
Sound & Audio Vocalists record dialogue and a team of sound engineers record ambient sounds like market noise, preparing them for integration into the film during the post-production phase. In 3D animation, the post-production phase is similar to that of a 2D animation video.
Editing To enhance the artistic vision of the film, the final product is reviewed and edited for the inclusion of sound effects, audio, and special visual effects. The video is ready for release. After Effects is an amazing tool for editing. Video Editors critique the video, game, or movie, pointing out any possible changes. The video is ready for a final render once this is completed and all required edits have been made.
Rendering 3D rendering is the process of producing an image based on three-dimensional data stored on a computer. It is much like photographing or filming a virtual 3D scene. The modeling, texturing, shading, lighting, and animation information are thus combined and rendered pixel by pixel to determine the overall look of the final render. Blender, Maxwell, & Cinema 4D are some tools for doing rendering.
